Serves: 6-8

Prep time: 25 Minutes

Bake time: 40-45 Minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk

  • 3/4 cup caramel sauce (caramel ice cream topping)

  • 5 tablespoons melted butter

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 3 large eggs

  • 5 cups cubed challah bread or french bread (at least 1-2 days old)

  • 2 cups chopped apples

Crisp Topping:
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2/3 cup packed brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup cold cubed butter

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions:

  1. Peel and slice the apples into fine, small pieces. Toss with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice over the apples to prevent browning.

  2. In a bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and melted butter until smooth. Add in caramel sauce, cinnamon, apple pie spice and salt. Whisk everything until full combined.

  3. Chop bread into small cubes and place into a large separate bowl.

  4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and stir gently. Let it sit for 10 minutes so the bread absorbs the liquid.

  5. Fold in the chopped apples until evenly distributed.

  6. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with non stick spray or butter. Pour the bread-apple mixture into the baking dish and spread evenly.

  7. Preheat the oven to 350F and bake for 20-22 minutes.

  8. In a bowl, add brown sugar, flour, salt, and cubed butter. Using a pastry cutter or your hands, mix until a coarse crumbly texture forms.

  9. Remove the baking dish from oven. Sprinkle the crisp crumble topping evenly over the partially baked bread pudding.

  10. Return the dish to the oven and bake for another 20-22 minutes at 350F until golden and set. Let it sit for 10 minutes to slightly cool.

  11. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and enjoy!
