Serves: Depends on apple size

Prep time: 15 Minutes

Bake time: None

Ingredients

  • 2-1/2 cups sugar

  • 2/3 cup light corn syrup

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • Red food colouring gel (I used 2 x 19g tubes)

  • Water for boiling apples + 1-1/2 tablespoons baking soda

Directions:

  1. Rinse and thoroughly dry the apples. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly grease.

  2. In a pot of boiling water, add in baking soda. Place the apples in the boiling water for 10-15 minutes. This will help remove the grocery store wax layer.

  3. Remove from the boiling water and completely dry them. Insert a wooden candy stick or sturdy dowel firmly into the top of each apple.

  4. Place a saucepan over medium-low heat and add the sugar, corn syrup and water. Stir gently to combine.

  5. Place a candy thermometer inside and let the mixture come up to 290F. Do not stir while it heats.

  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat, and carefully stir in the red food colouring.

  7. Work quickly and carefully, tilting the pan and dipping each apple into the mixture, swirling to coat completely. Let any excess drip off, then place the coated apples onto the prepared baking sheet to fully set for 10 minutes.

  8. Let the candy apples cool completely, then serve and enjoy!
